While walking across a muddy park
I came upon a man
Sitting on a muddy bench,
His head was in his hands
I asked him why he was so down
And maybe I could help
He never moved but said some words
As if talking too himself
Could have been, would have been, should have been
Was all he had to say
Then cried with long and mournful sobs
Until I went away

While walking down a busy street
I seen him once again
He was leaving a department store
And weeping in the rain
I asked him once again to tell
But with a blank sad stare
He looked straight passed and wandered by
As if I wasn’t there
Could have been, would have been, should have been
I heard him cry once more
Then vanished in the passing crowd
Until he was no more

I often wonder about that man
Who was so very sad
What made him utter those few words
What made him feel so bad
Was it love that passed him by
Or maybe something else
Maybe he’s still crying now
And saying to himself
Could have been, would have been, should he been
I hear those words right now
Drifting in the open air
With mournful tones somehow
