I was once a leaf,
I know that—
I trembled and waved
Like a green cockade in a rebel’s hat.

I danced with dewdrops
On the oak,
I dined on sunlight
But in the end, gave my essence up in smoke.

I was once a deer—
I still feel
Raw nerves as I browse
And always, there’s a fear of teeth and steel.

I flew with sparrows
One bright spring—
And with the eagles
That same autumn, as the cycle closed a ring.

I am the essence—
I sense that—
What was and will be
Lies waiting in my sub-atomic vat.
